Key principles of online assessment

Key principles of online assessment

The are few key principles of online assessment that are suppose to be follow when assessing learners. This principles will help in guide the assessor. The Most important key is that the assessment should be fair. When doing an assessment it does not present barriers for a learner to achieve good results, by just having a fair assessment will be good enough, because the scope have been set. it should have the
following:

Questions; should be written or oral format. When Randomizing the question and answer order. If you choose to randomize answers, consider not using answers such as ‘all the above,’ ‘both a and b are true. Sometimes randomization of questions and answers may cause these answers to be invalid. When delivering a question at time can be good learner will not know what questions is coming.
Assessment Guide; the should be a clear guide for the learner in the questions for one to answer correctly. Assessment method; learners should be fully informed about the methods of assessment when they are assessed.
  • Time: assessment should be timed to give all the learner a fair time to be assessed. Online tests should be for a limited period of time.
  • Management: The assessment should be manageable, the method of assessment should be more cost effective and should not interfere with the learning process. If learning and workplace are separated the activities will surfer. If it’s a group assessment, by assessing the competency of the group should also be aligned with individuals in the group. The tools used during assessment should be put in place for easy management of the assessment.
When Designing online test questions, they must be in a manner that it isn’t easy for learners to look up information and still complete the test on time. Including several questions that relate directly to online discussions will bare a learner not to copy. These questions will be difficult to answer by someone who hasn’t participated in the discussions before.
  • Security: It is key when come to online assessment, by taking security measures such as having a password to enter the online test, arrange that a learner contact you before gaining access to the test; or utilize a lock-down browser to prevent printing, copying, going to another URLs that they are not suppose to go to, or accessing other applications that will make a learner to copy.

Online can be a fast medium to deliver test results but is advisable to not release the test results to learners after the test has been completed. Relying on online assessment can be a downfall sometimes because technology is unpredictable, you should always have at least other methods of evaluation incase anything happens.
